AVS Aylesbury - Sensory Garden at The Lady Ryder Memorial Garden

Our Aylesbury branch has been involved in a fantastic local charity initiative, the building of a new Sensory Garden within The Lady Ryder Memorial Garden, donating and providing at cost landscaping materials for the project including paving and railway sleepers.

In 2009 a group of local enthusiasts started to restore the old kitchen garden adjacent to St Katharine's Parmoor, a retreat run by the Sue Ryder charity. With the help of volunteers from local organisations including disadvantaged and homeless youth, The Lady Ryder Memorial Garden has now grown to include an education centre helping those less fortunate than many in the local community, including those affected by drugs, without homes and without employment.

The new Sensory Garden has been designed to give an accessible and inspiring external gathering, meeting and educational space for the outreach programme and other visitors to the garden, including residents from the neighbouring St Katharine's retreat.

The new Sensory Garden, which officially opened this month, is a beautiful mix of sandstone and brick paving with raised beds and borders filled with scented planting. Seating areas are scattered throughout the garden to make the most of this calming and contemplative space.

Jason Tilbury at AVS Aylesbury, who has lead the project for AVS commented "We were delighted to get involved with such a great charity project. The work that the local volunteers have done is incredible, and the Sensory Garden will provide a fantastic resource for the local community for years to come."
