Running a successful business can be made trickier by having limited resources. So if you are considering using social media for your business, you’ll want to know how to best use your time effectively.

One of the advantages of using social media is that it is free. The issue you may face however is the time it takes to get it running. To create a strong social media presence, you need to be prepared to invest your time and patience. But if you do, the rewards can be huge.

    The first step is to create a social media strategy. You need to know who your customers are, including information about their age, gender, profession and interests, in order to understand your target audience.

    Write down these details from the information you already know about your customers or people you often see in the supplier stores you visit. Create a few ‘characters’ that represent your potential customers and think about the key problems you could solve for them.

    Then think about 3 main messages you want to send out to your audience. This could be anything from providing tips on common questions about fencing to posting links to industry news. Think about what your audience would want to see, other than just adverts for your business.

    What to Post

    As already mentioned, you need to plan what types of messages you want to post from your social media accounts. A few ideas to get you started could be:-

  • Short tips & tricks on doing jobs related to your business, ie. Best time of year to apply timber stain
  • Photos of clients’ works you have completed or are in progress currently. Social media is the perfect platform to show off your hard work!
  • Letting people know industry events you are going to or are coming up. Asking ‘Are you attending….?’ will engage people
  • Posting testimonials from clients is a great way of building a positive image of your business
  • Recommending products you have used. Mentioning other companies on twitter could lead to more exposure if the company was to Retweet it on Twitter for example
  • If you have a website, link to it occasionally. Also provide a short explanation of what your business does, eg. 'If you’re looking for garden maintenance contractors in Essex, call us on….or visit our website'. Avoid making all your posts about your business and instead use the ideas mentioned above regularly. This will engage potential customers more and show you to be the industry expert that you are.
  • Connecting with your Audience

    There a few social media channels you can take advantage of, including Twitter, Facebook and Google +. If you already use these for personal use, you will probably know how to do things like post messages, like and share posts, and follow other people.

    As a guide, tweets on Twitter should be short and to the point. Images work well for grabbing people’s attention. You can make your posts a little longer on Facebook, Google + and LinkedIn as they have a higher word limit. Images also work well on these platforms.

    Photo based social media platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram are great for showcasing work you are proud of are in the process of completing. Take a look at our Pinterest board to get an idea of how the images are displayed.

    Spending your Time Wisely

    Incorporate social media into your daily routine by beginning with a manageable load. Maybe start with just one or two platforms like Facebook and Twitter for example and move on to others when you have got used to these. Scheduling just 10 minutes a day gives you the opportunity to post something engaging. Then build it up to 10 minutes, twice a day when you feel comfortable.

    If you want to get more content out but are short on time, social media tools such as Hootsuite allow you to schedule posts in bulk, to be sent out at whatever time you set it to.

    Once you feel comfortable posting regular messages, you can start expanding your network. Use Twitter for example to follow people in your local area that have mentioned something relevant to your business in their posts.

    If you have a website, provide links to your social media accounts on there. Also ask your friends and existing followers to share your posts so you can reach their audiences too.
