What Ironmongery Do I Need For Field Gates?

Adjustable field gate hinge sets are installed by clamping the top band around the gate with the band running along the top rail of the gate. The band is then bolted through the gate to secure it in place. The bottom adjustable gate fitting is then bolted through the gate near the bottom, usually between the bottom two rails.

The hook to bolt is then bolted through the gate post and the hook to drive driven into the gate post at the appropriate height, using the position of the fittings on the gate as guides and leaving clearance for the gate to swing. For security purposes the hooks can be positioned with the top hookpointing down and the bottom hook pointing upwards.

Latches Pre-Packed Galvanised

Latches should be installed after the gate(s) has been hung.

Spring fastener sets are installed by first fixing the ‘U’ shaped bracket on to the field gate in line with the top rail, then by fixing the handle to the style, (through the ‘U’ bracket). Then finally fix the ‘U’ staple catch in to place on the post.

Equestrian latches are installed by first fixing the slide bolt to the second rail down. Then position the handle in a position where it is easy to move and will draw the bolt almost all the way into the gate. A hole can then be drilled in the post to receive the bolt and to prevent damage to the post, the hole can be secured with the metal plate provided.

The double gate fastener should be installed after your field gate(s) have been hung.

The double gate fastener set is installed by first lining up your two gates, placing the “hook over band” on top and around the gates and then securing it in place by bolting it through one of the gates. Making sure that the band is secured in one gate and loops over both and holds them in place.

The drop bolt should then be attached by simply screwing it in to place. A hole of some kind should be made for the drop bolt to slide in to. A plate is provided for securing the edge of drilled concrete, other holes can be secured by using a piece of pipe buried in the ground.

The drop bolt should be installed after your gate has been hung and secured with a latch or catch.

The drop bolt is attached by simply screwing it into place. A hole of some kind should be made for the drop bolt to slide into. A plate is provided for securing the edge of drilled concrete, other holes can be secured by using a piece of pipe buried in the ground.

The top band is installed by bolting it to the gate in line with the top rail.

The bottom band is installed by bolting it and screwing it into place at the required height near the bottom of the gate style.

The adjustable bottom gate fitting is installed by bolting it through the gate style, (usually between the bottom two rails), ensuring the plates are either side of the gate style, clamping around it.

The gate eyes are usually used with metal gates. They are slid through the slots in the style of the gate and hung on hooks attached to the posts. Then they are adjusted to suit so that the gate can swing freely.

The hook to bolt and the hook to bolt with plate is installed by literally bolting it through the gate post, through a pre-drilled hole.

The hook to drive is installed by pre-drilling a hole in the gate post knocking it in to the hole to literally drive it into the post.

The hook to build is installed by building it into a brickwork column or suitable sized wall.

The hook on 4” plate is installed by using a suitable fixing to bolt or screw it onto a brick wall/column or a timber gate post.

Latches and Catches

The self locking gate latch, the hunting gate catch and the central closing gate catch are all installed by screwing them on to the post using coach screws. M10x80 is usually suggested depending on the size of your post.

The cranked striker and the single ‘D’ leg striker are both installed by bolting them through the gate style.

The mortice gate catch is installed by putting a mortice hole (square/rectangular cut hole), through the style of your gate and fixing the mortice latch in place through the hole. The actual catch part is then fixed in place on the gate post ready to receive the mortice latch

The throw over gate loop galvd. and the throw over gate loop with handle galvd. are both installed by first lining up your two gates, placing the throw over gate loop galvd. or the throw over gate loop with handle galvd. on top and around the gates and then securing it in place by bolting it through one of the gates. Make sure that the band is secured in one gate and loops over both and holds them in place.

The safety hook and eye galvd. is installed by simply screwing it into place.

Note: Make sure to pre-drill any holes required for large screws as you are likely to split the wood if you don’t.
