Soil retention is often required when sloping ground is levelled, maybe at the periphery of these areas. When the ground is dug back and forms a natural wall or bank it needs supporting as it is not durable with frost and rain breaking it down. Therefore either a masonry or timber structure should be built in front to support the soil.
Another scenario is creating new raised areas, these will be filled with soil after the structures are in place.
