All of the driveway gates currently listed are made of timber and fall into two groups. AVS have high level ddriveway gates which are typically up to approximately 2.25m high or lower level driveway gates, such as field gates, which have an open construction.
There are two reasons why one would have a driveway gate which was thicker, either because you want to have a slightly stronger and more robust gate, which becomes more important as the gate becomes wider. The second reason being because you have chosen to automate the gate rather than open or close it manually. In cases where gates are expected to be automated, as well as making these from thicker timber, we are also able to add a solid bottom rail which will help the gate withstand the continual pressure of the automation equipment.
It is undoubtedly true that hardwood driveway gates are slightly stronger than softwood driveway gates for any given thickness. A hardwood driveway gate is subsequently more expensive but you may feel it’s worth the extra cost if it is going to grace the front of your property for many years to come. A field gate can be a good driveway gate because they are routinely available in widths up to 3.6m wide, which means often a single driveway gate in the form of a field gate can span the driveway. If you choose not to automate your gate then having a single gate to open will be faster than having to open two separate gates. Furthermore, field gates will not catch the wind like a solid and taller driveway gate, which may be important if you are in an exposed location.
