Broadly speaking there are three types of decks, ground level decks which are situated just above ground level and raised decks which may be multi-levelled, or tiered decks which are situated further above the ground. The starting point for your deck is to construct a framework from timber rails, typically a mixture of 150 x 47mm and 100 x 47mm. Using these two sizes of timber decking rails create a series of joists. Once you have finished constructing the framework for your garden decking, it is a good idea to test it thoroughly by resting some decking boards loosely on the joists and checking for level and firmness by walking around on the boards, ensuring that the framework is rigid and does not move.
The width of the decking board will affect how many boards are needed to cover a square metre, broadly speaking the wider the decking board, the cheaper the price the square metre is likely to be when compared with the cost per linear metre. AVS Fencing decking materials do not include decking boards which are very thin, with our decking boards starting at a finished thickness of 28mm, rising to 34mm approximately. our decking boards don’t need the joists to be as close together as some thinner decking boards on the marketplace. This is advantageous to you because it means, potentially, the framework for your decking when using AVS decking boards will cost less than some budget decking boards. Finally, the other item of materials needed to complete most decks is the hand railing and ballustrading systems. These are essential for raised level decks to prevent people falling or slipping, but are optional on lower level decks. The hand railing is fitted between newel posts which are set between 1.8m and 2.4m apart around the edge. These newel posts are typically joined onto the decking frame and joist system beneath the deck boards, rather than being extensions of the posts that are put into the ground to support the deck. Each section of hand railing, complete with a hand rail, spindles or balustrades and a base rail, is normally constructed on the ground and then lifted into position between two newel posts and fitted using brackets available from AVS.
