The barbed wire which AVS Fencing sells is suitable for livestock fencing and for security fencing applications. The barbed wire falls into two broad categories mild steel barbed wire or high tensile barbed wire. The mild steel barbed wire is the traditional barbed wire and is made from the thicker wire. Barbed wire is always packed in 200m coils which can be unrolled by placing a bar or tube through the centre of the coil of wire. Barbed wire can be strained tight using normal wire strainers the same as those used on plain wire or line wire fencing. Barbed wire is normally fixed to timber posts using fencing staples unless it is used for security fencing applications when it may be fixed to the steel fence posts or concrete fence posts using plain wire sometime know as stirrup wire. Barbed wire needs to strained between firmly fixed straining posts normally set up to 69m apart although for many perimeter livestock situations following a twisting hedge line this distance may average only 30 or 40m. Fencing stakes or intermediate posts for barbed wire would normally be set 2.5m to 4m apart. Gloves are normally used when handling barbed wire.
