Hinges are an essential form of ironmongery when erecting fencing and gates. The most common form of hinge for garden gates is the ‘tee’ hinge but a wide range of other traditional gate hinges is sold including heavy reversible hinges, hook and band hinges and field gate hinges. The most common size of hinge for supporting a 900mm wide timber garden gate is the 450mm or 18” ‘tee’ hinge. Hinges are available in either black or galvanised finish. Hinges are available in pre-packed from which come complete with all the nuts, bolts and screws needed. It is worth noting that the installation of hinges on garden gates is normally done so that the hinge is laid flat across the back or front of the gate, unlike an internal door it does not sit folded when the gate is in the closed position.
