Garden Vegetable Beds

Garden vegetable beds are ideal for growing your own organic vegetables. AVS sell a range of vegetable beds in different sizes to accommodate everyones individual needs. We also sell a raised vegetable bed which is ideal for those of you with bad backs or other health issues where bending down regularly would not be advisable.

All our veggie beds are sold in kit form, making assembly and erection a simple and satisfying DIY job.

Garden Top Soil Benefits & Uses

Premium Topsoil with organic matter and all major plant nutrientsis  appropriate for all landscaping and vegetable growing uses. The benefits of using premium topsoil bulk bags, or our smaller premuim grade top soil 30L is that it has the perfect nutrient content for growing vegetables.

Garden Compost Benefits & Uses

Compost contains a full spectrum of essential plant nutrients. Some advantages of using garden compost when growing vegetables are;

  1. Compost releases nutrients slowly over months or years, unlike synthetic fertilizers.

  2. Compost enriched soil hold fertilizers better.

  3. Compost can suppress diseases and harmful pests that could overrun poor, lifeless soil.

The Benefits Of Growing Your Own Fruit and Vegetables

One of the best things people can do for themselves, the enviroment, their pocket and the garden is to grow some fruit or veg. Some of the benefits are:

  1. Price- it is cheap to buy seeds or starter plants. A packet of seeds often costs less than a head of lettuce itself.

  2. Environment- the reduction of travel to supermarkets to get fruit and veg as it has been grown at home. This may not look like a big change, however if we all do this it will have a major impact.

  3. Health- when you grown your own fruit and veg you are in control of pesticides. The fewer chemicals in our food, the better!

  4. No waste- you can compost the dead plants at the end of the growing season and then use the garden soil for the following year.

  5. Personal Reward- it has been discovered that being connected to nature has its personal rewards as you are seeing the development form start to finish.

  6. Freshness- fresh picked vegetables are going to be better for you and better tasting to those which were picked at an earlier date and stored.

The Impact of Slugs

Slugs can make short work of vegetables and crops while merrily munching their way through your vegetable patch!

Ideally, slugs should be kept well away from your crops so it is best to do everything unattractive to a slug. However, even with all the traps in the world some slugs will still find their way onto your crops, therefore barriers can be used. Slugs like moist areas, so placing a ring of sharp sand or gravel will help deter most slugs.

Salt will kill the slugs, but do not let this enter the soil of your growing area as this will also prevent your plants from thriving. Additonally, putting out beer is also a good way to kill slugs or there are slug pellets, but be careful using these in areas where pets may consume the poison.
