It is best to buy well in advance for the Winter season when your logs or firewood are needed, that way the wood you buy will have a chance to dry out further and continue to season. Appropriate storage is very important, somewhere undercover to store your logs will be needed. The best log storage is somewhere that your logs are sheltered from rain whilst also allowing in some sun, air and breeze.
The best logs are produced using hardwood such as oak, beech & ash. Some birch is often mixed in as dry birch will burn a little faster. Sweet Chestnut, a hardwood, is not used by us in our best hardwood log mix because it has a tendency to spit, making it suitable for wood burning stoves but not open fires. Softwood logs, such as pine and spruce, tend to burn much faster than hardwood so they need to be much cheaper in order to be cost effective. Overall, it is hard to find a better log than a seasoned hardwood log when used for open fires, with oak being the best firewood of all.
