Decking Boards

Decking boards are visually the most important part of your garden decking. Decking boards are either smooth or profiled with grooves or reeding. one can have hours of fun discussing with your partner which decking board pattern, profile, size and type to choose but there is certainly a trend today for smooth decking boards and two of the decking boards sold on the website, the Canterbury decking and the AVS Fencing our own brand of decking have smooth sides, they also have on the reverse side a profiled finish so if you change your mind at the last minute you can turn the decking boards over and fit the reverse. What about hardwood decking boards I hear you say, well, hardwood decking boards are regularly used for decking, we have a selection on the website here.

Hardwood decking boards are frequently used for commercial decking projects at locations such as Public Houses and in shopping areas because they are harder wearing, in private gardens for garden decking then hardwood decking boards are a choice made by personal preference inevitably they are more expensive but if you are looking to create a prestigious and classy decking area they will be an essential feature of your garden deck. Having chosen your decking boards you will need to be able to fix them firmly to the decking framework that has been created and the best method of fixing decking boards is to use decking screws which have been made specifically for this job. AVS do not recommend nailing decking boards in case the decking boards have to be lifted because it is sometimes necessary to access drainage and outside plumbing that may run underneath the deck. AVS sell decking boards in a range of lengths from 3.6m, 4.2m and 4.8m although this range of sizes does not cover all styles of decking boards which are sold. It is best to join decking boards by staggering the joints in different areas of the deck rather than lining them up this way any joints in the decking boards on a large decking area will not stand out and you will hardly notice them.

Decking boards can also be used to create other features on your deck such as planters or in connection with your deck, sometimes they can be used to clad the sides of raised decks. A feature of all of the softwood treated decking boards on this website is that the timber used is slow grown pine redwood which is an ideal timber to accept the treatment giving your decking boards a long life and also an ideal timber to minimise splitting which may occur when the boards dry out. Decking boards are currently wax treated at source but should be additionally coated from time to time with the approximate timber treatment, if you can prevent your decking boards drying out and getting damp every time the atmosphere changes, every time it rains or the sun comes out, then the boards will stay in a pristine condition. There are a number of ways of laying your decking boards and you may want to consider in which direction or directions your decking boards are going to run when planning your garden decking.

In the simplest form your decking boards can either run across the decking from side to side or from front to back but there are more options and sometimes people to choose to divide the decking areas up into sections and run the boards in different directions sometimes even at an angle across the deck. Any of these solutions for laying your decking boards can look really good and can make your garden decking look that little bit different.
