Wooden Decking
When planning Wooden Decking many people start by looking at the appearance of the Decking Boards that will cover the timber decking, choosing the decking board is a good start when planning a garden decking project. The first choice is hardwood or softwood decking board, for a domestic project in your garden at home either wood is normally suitable.
Hardwood Decking Boards
Hardwood decking boards can be maintained to retain a rich natural wood colour or allowed to grey naturally which would suit a period property, another alternative for the older property is oak decking boards. AVS are also able to supply Oak Decking Board to order. However our standard hardwood decking board is made from Balau a foreign hardwood often used for wooden decking due to it being reliable when exposed to damp and sunlight. In terms of cost hardwood will be more, at slightly more than double the price of the softwood deck boards, but viewed in terms of the length of time taken to grow the hardwood we believe it represents excellent value for money. It worth mentioning that for a commercial projects which often have a larger footfall across the surface of the decking that hardwood decking will be much harder wearing. Hardwood decking is normally fitted to a softwood treated frame beneath as the framing timber and decking posts are normally out of sight.
Softwood Decking Boards
Softwood decking boards are sold in several styles and thickness. Avs do not sell thin deck boards for wooden decking of around 20mm thickness as these are false economy requiring as they do an increased amount of framing material making any cost saving on the cheap decking board a falsehood. AVS are proud that their decking board is ex38mm thick and the popular Winchester and Canterbury decking boards are ex 32mm so that they create a deck which is firm under foot with a minimum of work to create a solid structure of decking joists under the decking boards. The main choice with timber decking is the appearance of the board being either grooved or smooth. Smooth decking boards are becoming very popular for timber decking and both the Canterbury and AVS decking board which are both reversible have a smooth face.
Having chosen the decking board you will be using, planning the shape, size and levels of your garden decking project is important. There are no rules no rights and wrongs just decide what you want to do to create your dream outdoor living space in your garden. How the deck works with existing ground levels and neighbouring properties will be important and may be the position of the deck in relation to how the sun lands in your garden and at which time of day you expect to use your garden decking. If it is in the late afternoon and evening then it will need to face west. This is why it is worth considering if your timber decking should be joined to your house to form a natural and seamless extension to your living area or situated at the bottom of your garden to pick up the sunlight. So take you time to sketch out some plans for your wooden decking try marking out the area with string or similar to get a good feel for the shape of the decking area you are about to create.
