Step 1
After finding a good location for your raised bed, make sure that all the debris is clear for you to start your project. Make sure that all your tools are ready for action and let’s get moving. Firstly make sure that you have measured the correct length of the location where you intend to locate the raised bed.
Step 2
Once you have measured the area, you can then decide on the amount of railway sleepers you need to create the desired length and depth of the raised bed. This is an important stage as railway sleepers are very heavy and once they are put together they are unable to be moved easily.
Step 3
Put railway sleepers together in their desired location and fix together using either steel rods, landscaping screws, or both. Its must be noted that to create professional finish, the railway sleepers will need to be set firm to the ground and be level. To make sure this is correct a spirit level will suffice.
Step 4
Once you have your railway sleeper raised bed frame built, level and secured, it is time to add the soil. This will enable you to either start growing your own vegetation or for planting flowers, as you can see from the picture above. To protect the railway sleepers and avoid weeds growing up and through your raised bed, it is advisable to use a membrane within the base.
If using for vegetation it is advisable to use the new softwood or new hardwood sleepers, instead of the second hand reclaimed sleepers, as the second hand sleepers have been creosoted and should not be used when growing vegetation.
Step 5
Go out to your garden and enjoy your vibrant new raised beds!
This project is indicating the use of AVS Second hand hardwood sleepers for creating a raised bed. These railway sleepers are ideal as they give a professional weathered look that fits straight into the theme of your dream garden. These second hand railway sleepers are of high quality with few defects, all at affordable prices.

Step 1
Once you have found the idyllic place to have your raised sleeper bed, it is important to measure the correct length and diameter of the location, so that you can purchase the desired number of sleepers. This is an important step as second hand railway sleepers are very heavy and you do not want to have to constantly move them to fit into the correct location.
Step 2
Make sure that the desired location for your raised sleeper bed is debris free and ready to lay the sleepers on. It may be an idea to mark the area where the sleepers will be located to help you when laying the sleepers and also to save time.
Step 3
Once the railway sleepers are level and in place it is necessary to fix the railway sleepers frame together by using Carpenters landscaping screws or Timberlock screws. It might help to mark out the fixing points and check the sleepers are level before screwing together, as once sleepers are set are not easily moved.
Step 4
Now the frame is level and is constructed to your desired length and height, you may want to add the membrane inside the structure. This is advisable to stop weeds growing up before you add soil or other materials. If you are planning on creating the raised bed for vegetation, it must be noted that we do not advise that second hand sleepers be used for vegetation and when in frequent skin contact, as they are creosoted.
