Tips On Balustrading For Decking

Newel Posts

Building the newel posts into the deck can be done by attaching the newel post to the joists of the framework. This should be done if there are two or more joists to attach to. For example in a corner of the framework joint. Bolts are suggested for this purpose.

Balustrade

Place the spindles between the fillets/infill’s at the appropriate spacing’s and screw the spindles into place through the top of the top fillet/infill and from underneath of the bottom of the bottom fillet/infill.

The fillets/infill’s can then be screwed into place underneath the handrail and slotted into the base rail to keep the joints hidden.

Fixing the Balustrades to the Newel Posts

The handrail is attached to the newel post by using handrail brackets. These are simple ‘L’ shaped brackets. First screw the bracket onto the underneath of the handrail and base rail.

Then attach the completed balustrade to the post by screwing the handrail bracket into the side of the post.

Small screws are suggested for this, the length is based upon the depth of your handrail.
