Arris Rails
Ended arris rails are installed by slotting them into the mortice hole in the post during erection of the fence.
Un-ended arris rails can be ended with a handsaw or adze and then slotted into the post the same way as an ended arris rail. The other method is to use arris rail support brackets. These simply screw or nail into the rail and onto the post.
Cant Rails
Cant rails are installed by bolting to a concrete post or screwing them to a timber post. Another method is to buy posts which have been notched to suit the cant rail. (Available in Concrete only, stocked at AVS Peterborough branch.)
Counter Rails
A counter rail is a piece of timber that is nailed or morticed into both posts and then nailed to the feather edge. (1 nail every fourth feather edge is suggested.) It can then be used to support a Capping which is nailed to it.
87x38 Rails
The 87x38mm is simply nailed to the vertical posts. One post every 1.5m (for 3.0m rail,) or 1.8m (for a 3.6m rail,) is suggested.
100x38 Rails
The 100x38mm is simply nailed to the vertical posts. One post every 1.8m is suggested.
100x47 Rails
The 100x47mm rail can be used for a simple post and rail fence. It is simply Nailed or Screwed to the vertical posts. One post every 1.8m is suggested, (based on a 3.6m rail, 1.5m for a 3.0m rail and 2.4m for a 4.8m rail.) It is possible to have posts morticed for the 100x47mm rail, but this is less common and is a special order, via the branch itself.
When using the 100x47mm rails as joists in decking, two methods can be used. The first is to used Joist Hangers. These are simply Nailed or Screwed onto both the opposing joist/Post and the joist that is being supported.
The second method is to simply Nail or Screw, (Using Carpenter Mate Screws or Timberlok Screws.) through the opposing joist/Post into the end of the joist that is being supported.
150x38 Rails
The 150x38mm rail can be used for a simple post and rail fence or as retainer boards in a riding arena. The rail is simply nailed or screwed to the vertical posts. One post every 1.8m is suggested.
Machine Half Round Rails
The 3.66m x 100mm rail can be used for a simple post and rail fence. It is simply nailed or screwed to the vertical posts. One post every 1.83m is suggested.
Peeled Half Round Rails
The 3.66m x 100-125mm rail can be used for a simple post and rail fence. It is simply Nailed or Screwed to the vertical posts. One post every 1.83m is suggested.
