Garden Sleeper Blogs

If you want to ensure your garden has a positive effect on the value of your home should you ever want to move, keep it simple. While intricately designed gardens can look great they can be a disadvantage if you ever decide to move. Your taste may not match others and those with young children are likely to prefer gardens that are spacious and open plan.

Also, people may equate a well manicured garden to high maintenance and extra expense, which can be off putting for busy families. Keep things neat and tidy by using borders, edging and clear pathways. Using sleepers or oak planks is an easy way to separate paths from flower beds. Fewer large flower pots are less cluttered than lots of smaller pots, so use them to add seasonal colour to a patio/seating area.

Remember, clean, neat and tidy is the best way to keep a garden for adding the most to any home.

Softwood sleepers are ideal for using in gardens and can be used for a huge variety of things. These sleepers aren't technically railway sleepers, as they've never seen a railway. But they are so similar in size and shape they have adopted the name. Basically they are a multi tasker for garden landscaping.

The safe, eco friendly pressure treatment means they can be used for furniture, bot outside and inside, and are safe to have in areas where children play, unlike the creosoted reclaimed sleepers. It also means that they are well protected against rot and insects so will last in the garden for many years.

New sleepers are incredibly popular as edging for garden paths, borders for flower beds, raised vegetable beds, steps and pond structures, amongst other things. The softwood sleepers can also make excellent pergolas and are much lighter to handle than the new oak or the reclaimed sleepers, making them relatively easy to use.

Large Composter

It’s easy to make a few adjustments to your garden to make it more eco friendly for 2012. The easiest way to improve your eco friendliness is to start growing your own herbs and vegetables. A small raised bed kit for herbs won’t take up much space in your garden and you will soon reap the rewards. If you have more space for a larger raised bed you can grow a variety of organic foods, such as potatoes, broccoli and root vegetables, as well as herbs. A major benefit of growing your own food is that you know exactly what’s gone into it. This means no harsh pesticides or other chemicals, just healthy home grown, organic food.

Another easy and inexpensive option is to purchase a compost bin. This gives you a place to dispose of all your biodegradable waste efficiently and will provide essential nutrients for your garden. This kind of waste would otherwise end up in a landfill, where air cannot get to the organic waste. This means that when the waste breaks down it releases methane, which is damaging to the atmosphere. When the same material is broken down in a home compost bin, oxygen causes it to decompose aerobically, greatly reducing the amount of methane that is produced. Here at AVS Fencing we stock timber pressure treated compost bins in small, medium and large sizes, so there is a size suitable for most space allowances. So why not grow your own vegetables or recycle your green waste and do your bit for the environment in 2012?!
