Macmillan Cancer Support

Who are Macmillan Cancer Support?

The Macmillan Cancer Support charity makes a huge difference to people’s lives all over the UK.

Cancer affects not only the sufferers of the disease, but the family and friends of those affected. It was Douglas Macmillan’s experience of this back in 1911 that prompted him to start the ‘Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer’.

After Douglas Macmillan sadly saw his father die of cancer, he decided that he wanted to provide advice and information to all people with cancer, as well as offer homes for patients, and voluntary nurses to attend patients in their own homes.

It is thanks to Macmillan's vision that the charity is able to support people living with cancer today. Macmillan Cancer Support has in fact now grown to become one of the largest cancer care and support charities in the UK.

More people than ever before are now living with cancer, meaning that it has become even more important to reach and support a large number of people. It certainly is a challenge but Macmillan’s capable team are determined to do it.

What Support do Macmillan offer?

Essentially, Macmillan Cancer Support are:-

Macmillan provide practical support to people affected by cancer, as well as their carers, families and communities. The charity funds nurses and other specialist health care professionals to provide care for cancer sufferers, as well as build cancer care centres.

They also allow carers to take a break by offering time to help care and give lifts to hospital. Emotional support through listening and advising is also given and there is plenty of information on everything relating to cancer, available on their website.
