July Gardening Jobs

Now July is here, it is time to start getting stuck into those all-important summer gardening jobs. If however you are a little unsure of what jobs need doing around the garden during July, we have a helpful checklist, prepared just for you.

When it comes to taking care of your plants, you should consider doing the following:-

  • Place conservatory plants outside
  • Water new plants if they are dry
  • Ensure continuous flowering of your bedding plants and repeat-flowering perennials by de-heading them
  • To raise new plants, pick bulbils from lily stems and pot them up
  • Liquid feed shrubs and perennial plants
  • Keep roses flowering strongly by feeding them
  • Pinch out the shoot tips on bedding plants
  • Sow seed from foxgloves in small pots of compost immediately after saving
  • If you are growing fruits and vegetables, the following gardening jobs need to be done during July:-

  • Regularly pick sweet peas and remove any seed heads
  • If gooseberries have become ripe, now is the time to pick them
  • Protect apples and gooseberries with a fungicide to protect them against mildew
  • Pick your courgettes before they turn into marrows
  • Lift early potatoes, and pick mangetout peas and beans
  • Water marrows, celery, runner beans, salads and courgettes
  • It is also important to take care of general jobs around the garden:-

  • Get rid of blanket weeds, debris and algae from your pond
  • Keep your lawn healthy with a fast-acting summer feed
  • Apply paint or preserver to woodwork such as fencing and garden furniture while the weather is dry
  • Prune bay trees
  • Check for signs of problem pests such as lily beetle and vine weevil
  • Keep hedges and topiary trimmed
  • Top up bird baths
  • Open all vents in your greenhouse and prop doors open on hot days
