Pallets are sometimes overlooked for being scraps of wood that are only used to transport large quantities of goods. This however couldn't be further from the truth.
Wooden pallets are in fact extremely versatile objects that can be totally transformed given the right amount of imagination, design and skill. Recycling is of course, positive for the environment but it is also a great excuse to get creative and save money on items you would normally buy in shops.
But where do you start? Luckily we are offering some ideas to get you started with your very own pallet projects.
Where to Source Wooden Pallets
You won’t find it hard to come across plenty of pallets just screaming to be taken home! Just look in your local garden centre, small hardware stores, pet stores and stationers to find unwanted pallets just sitting there waiting. Of course, we would advise that you ask store owners first!
At AVS, we are regularly left with lots of pallets that you are very welcome to take for free. Just find your nearest branch and enquire inside. We would be extremely pleased to help you out.
Picking your Pallet Project
Now for the exciting part – what are you actually going to do with your unloved pallets?
Pallets can be used in the home or garden and can look as new or as rustic as you like. If you are new to crafting with wood, you could try something simple like making a garden planter. Or how about trying something more challenging like a pallet bench, bed or table?
Make a Garden Planter
Create your own garden planter by nailing sandpapered timber palings to the underside of the planter box to create shelves. Allow a gap for drainage or drill additional drainage holes in the planter box base. Sand down the planter box before applying paint or timber stain.
Make a Coffee Table
Or how about using your pallet to make a professional looking coffee table? Use two pallets to stack on top of each other and create a shelf area in the centre. Complete the look by adding wheels and painting it whichever colour you fancy!
Make a Headboard
Pallets also make an attractive headboard for your bed. Just make sure that you sand down the wood properly and remove any twisted nails as you want to make sure the surface is suitable for resting against. You can style it in a way that suits the rest of your bedroom furniture. For instance, this pallet has been transformed with a painted bird design.
