Advice on Deer Fencing

Deer fencing is essential as deer populations are currently on the rise, with six separate species living wild in the UK alone. This specialised fencing provides a reliable and cost-effective solution in a range of scenarios.

Inquisitive by nature, these animals are prone to wander into domestic gardens unless steps are taken to deter them. On the other hand, deer living in parks or on commercial properties may need to be contained in an enclosed area for a variety of reasons.

Protecting your Garden

If you live in a rural area with a nearby wild deer population, you might want to consider deer fencing primarily to protect your garden. Not only will stray deer eat grass, shrubs, bushes and roots, they can also inflict antler and hoof damage upon trees and plants. For keen gardeners or those cultivating vegetable plots on their land, these majestic animals can quickly become a real nuisance. The easiest and most dependable approach is to erect a strong barrier that will keep them out altogether.

Other Uses

Those managing sizeable deer populations on commercial properties are likely to require deer resistant fences for a variety of different reasons. The animals’ own protection may well be a major factor, particularly in close proximity to busy roads. At the same time, ensuring public safety and protecting property or crops may also be serious concerns. Adequate deer fencing will ensure that all of these needs are met simultaneously.

Things to Consider

Deer are capable of jumping in excess of six feet, so sufficient height is a key feature of this type of fencing. You will generally need a fence of at least 180cm or over, and of course it’s just as important that any gates are of an appropriate height.

When selecting deer fencing for this purpose, it’s also essential to take into consideration the quantities of deer that it will need to withstand. Deer won’t just try to jump over an obstacle: when faced with a barrier, they’ll also try to find a way underneath - or even through – whatever it is that stands in their way. With this in mind, mild steel is a popular choice for domestic garden deer fencing and netting, as it’s more suitable for dealing with relatively low numbers. For this purpose, AVS recommend a light weight deer netting, 200cm in height, with 23 horizontal wires and with vertical wires placed 15cm apart. This product is available in 50m rolls, which is ideal for gardens.

However, if you’re dealing with a higher density deer population, particularly in a commercial setting, you will definitely want to consider opting for high tensile deer fencing. Nearly twice as strong as mild steel, it is designed specifically to withstand pressure and impact, and will stay tight for longer. The high tensile version is 190cm in height, and the product is available in 100m rolls for larger scale projects.
